Later this month were going to be winding down the Drumbeat brand and web site. We’re going to be focusing on our most successful projects that also happen to be ones that will help us build the next generation of webmakers. Dev Derby February

Webmaker Goals

ID Provider + BrowserID
Dan Mills showcases a great new addition to BrowserID. Support for ID providers allows the registration flow to go from eight screens to just one. This is one more step to BrowserID becoming a truly distributed system.
December Dev Derby Winners
December’s Dev Derby was focused around IndexDB, a technology allowing web applications to store data for fast online and offline use. The submissions demonstrated just how powerful IndexDB can be. Be sure to try out the winning demos.

FOSDEM 2012
Last weekend many Mozillians attended FOSDEM in a freezing cold Brussels. A huge thank you to Benoit Leseul and team for organizing our efforts there. Rob Hawkes talked about open Web apps and open Web games, whilst Tristan Nitot announced six grants to international non-profits who will strengthen the Web, free and open source software and user sovereignty.
Mozilla Antarctica
The Mozilla Antarctica Community Site recently launched which will provide news, interviews and other stuff from the coolest Mozilla community. Not only do we love the penguins but Antarctica is the only continent to have a majority Firefox market share. Must be all the intelligent scientists using it!
Become a WebFWD Affiliate
Do you want to spread some open source love? You do? Great! Because you can now become a WebFWD affiliate and increase awareness of Mozilla’s open innovation program. Signing up is super simple and in a few clicks you can display your love of WebFWD.
Bedrock ready to go!
The Web Development team have finished the new Bedrock platform which will power the mozilla.org website. Bedrock is a complete rewrite of the site, clearing up years of cruft and implementing cool new features.

Open Election 2012, Tomorrow’s Webmakers, and more…

Open Election 2012
Mozilla partners with public media to launch Open Election 2012. The event will showcase how open web technologies and citizen participation can make election coverage more accessible to diverse audiences, and provide new ways to engage with the news. Tuesday’s State of the Union Address from U.S. President Barack Obama will include crowd sourced captions and subtitles provided by everyday citizens around the world.
Tomorrow’s Webmakers
Our Japanese community along with Mozilla staff and friends organised a wonderful hackjam event for young Web makers in Tokyo. The whole day was run as a series of Hive “Popups” which included activities like remixing the web with Hackasaurus and prototyping Web interfaces on paper.
Community Photo Collection
The Creative team needs your help collecting photos that capture the personality of our global community for an upcoming design project inspired by the new orange design of the Firefox download page. If you have any pictures that you’d like to submit, please tag them with mwcboothdesign by Thursday.
SOPA/PIPA Postponed
Thank you to everyone who spoke out against the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act. It’s your actions that have postponed these bills. We have a breakdown of the statistics for the campaign if you would like to find out more.

Protect the Internet, Mozilla Firefox Challenge, and more…

Protect the Internet
Mozilla is joining a virtual strike against Internet censorship – along with others like Wikipedia and Google – to raise awareness of U.S. Congress legislation that could fundamentally alter the Internet. This harmful legislation, called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), will be voted on as early as January 24th in the U.S. Senate. Want to help? Mozilla is pleased to announce that the Mozilla Firefox Challenge has raised more than $680,000 for social and humanitarian causes around the world. MPL Version 2.0, Badges Competition and more…

MPL Version 2.0
We’re starting off 2012 by releasing MPL 2.0, the updated version of the Mozilla Public License that is shorter, better, and more compatible with other Free Software and Open Source Licenses. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the process.
Badges Competition
Mozilla is seeking designers and developers to participate in the $2 million “Badges for Learning” competition. Participants will have the chance to design digital badges for more than 60 different leading organizations including NASA, Intel and Disney-Pixar, all aimed at providing recognition for learning that happens on the Web or outside of school. To get involved check out the competition Web site. Deadline for entries is January 17. Good luck.
WebFWD Resolutions
The WebFWD team share their goals for 2012 and some of the ways you can participate in their efforts to keep the Web open, innovative and at the service of users.
Add-ons Compatibility
All add-ons will be made compatible by default in the upcoming Firefox 10 release, so it’s crunch time for testing them in Beta, Aurora, and Nightly. It would be super helpful for everyone to install the Add-on Compatibility Reporter and let us know through the reporter if your add-ons are working properly.
Mozilla Project Meeting

Mozilla Europe will be folded under the umbrella of the broader Mozilla organization so that ideas incubated in Europe can now be more easily rolled out on a global scale. We’re also expanding our presence in Europe by opening more Mozilla Spaces early next year! Please discuss and provide feedback on mozilla.governance.
MozCamps: Many voices, one Mozilla
We’ve just wrapped up two inspiring MozCamps in Asia and Europe which brought together close to 500 Mozillians. BrowserID on Mozilla Websites
Over the next few months, we’ll be rolling out BrowserID on Mozilla Websites. When we do, we’ll point users to this blog post to explain what BrowserID is and why we think this is good for users. If you would like to find out more about BrowserID watch the video posted by Ben Adida on the WebFWD blog. If you have any questions please join our mailing list or just tweet with the hashtag #browserid.
Native UI for Firefox
Android users on the Firefox Nightly channel will soon get an update offer to switch over to the Native UI. If you come across bugs in this new version of Firefox, please file a bug and if you are interested in helping us test the new nightly; please download the latest release, and hop on IRC to provide any feedback. We launched Firefox 7 years ago to build freedom and excellence into the web. There is more to do and new experiences with identity, sharing and data to create. The next year will be busy, so first take a break with some red panda cuteness.
Mozilla Festival thank you
Mark Surman reflects on the Mozilla Festival and highlights a few things from #mozfest that give him confidence that we can indeed build the next generation of web makers. Find out what others took away from the Festival and if you attended let us know how your day went.
Support online innovation
The proposed Stop Online Piracy Act targets websites and threatens the functioning, freedom and economic potential of the Internet. Mozilla has joined with Google, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, eBay, AOL, Yahoo! and Zynga to oppose the bill, but it’s critical that Congress hears from everyone. Contact your legislator and tell him/her to vote against SOPA.
Firefox screencasts
Here are a nice collection of screencasts that show you how to use Mozilla Hackasaurus to remix web pages, how to use BrowserID to login into a web site and how to answer support questions in SUMO.
Mozilla Antarctica
Antarctica has a large percentage of Firefox users (plus large auroras that go well with Firefox Aurora) but there isn’t a Mozilla community there. Let’s fix that. Join the Mozilla Antarctica Facebook page and let’s spread Firefox to all seven continents.

Firefox Update
An update to Firefox for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android has been released and includes new features that make Web browsing easier, including Twitter search, a clean up of add-ons installed by third parties, improved 3D technology and more.
Popcorn 1.0
Mozilla has recently launched Popcorn 1.0. Popcorn allows web filmmakers to harness the web to expand their creations in new ways by pulling in real-time social media, news feeds, data visualizations, and other real-time web content directly into video playback. Finding Mozillians
The Mozillians team has landed a new “Groups” feature on mozillians.org. Mozillians can now add themselves and search for other Mozillians within groups/sub-communities such as “Quality Assurance” or “Firefox”. If you’re interested in contributing find out how to get involved.
